This is the riveting story of a Cuban-American's family return
trip to Cuba. In 1998, Jorge Reyes was informed that his
grandmother, whom he had not seen in over twenty years, was
suffering from a rare form of cancer. Curious to unravel the mystery
that for many years has enshrouded Cuba, he convinced his mother and
an aunt to accompany him on a visit to their native land. This, part
diary, part memoir, is based on this trip. With Reyes's unique voice
and insightful commentaries about present day Cuba, we are taken to
Santiago de Cuba on the eastern part of Cuba and to Boniato, a small
town on the outskirts of the city rumored to have been built atop an
old Indian cemetery. Along this road trip, we also meet a rich
tapestry of colorful characters and eccentric family members (some
still living, others dead), set against a rich background of
folklore, local color and politics.
